30th Celebration ex Boxes Fell to $59 While the Set Stalled

Sellers holding the 30th Celebration Greninja ex Box cut their asking price again this week. The cheapest genuine English copy on TCGplayer delivered for $58.93 on Friday afternoon, down from $74.63 the day before the set reached shelves. Its twin, the Sylveon ex Box, slid from $76.76 to $64.89 over the same four days. Those two boxes are now the only 30th Celebration products still getting cheaper, and the other five that launched on September 16 stopped falling after their first day on sale.

Both ex Boxes carry a $21.99 list price in the US, and each holds four 30th Celebration booster packs, a foil Greninja ex or Sylveon ex promo, and a matching oversize card. At $58.93 the Greninja box still costs about two and a half times what a store charges. 30th Celebration sealed prices, four days after release

Every figure below is the cheapest genuine English copy delivered to a US address, shipping included, read on the dates shown. The last column compares Friday's price to the US list price.

The middle of that table is flat. Five of the seven products moved less than two dollars between Wednesday and Friday, and the set as a whole sits at roughly 2.9 times list price, which is where it sat on release day and the day after.

That surprised us. The only completed example we have of a Pokemon set going through its release week is the Ascended Heroes tin line from late August, and those broke 22 to 24 percent in a single day and landed near 2.1 times list within three days. 30th Celebration broke about 6 percent on day one and then went sideways for three straight readings. Two reasons for the gap were visible before it happened, and both still hold up. The set had already been getting cheaper for a week before it shipped, so part of the premium was gone before boxes hit shelves. And the board is far deeper, with thousands of copies listed rather than dozens.

Why the two ex Boxes are still falling

The ex Boxes are the cheapest way into sealed 30th Celebration that contains packs, and that is exactly the product a person buys on impulse at Target and flips a week later. Supply arrives fast and leaves slowly. On Friday the Greninja box had 54 sellers holding 196 copies and the Sylveon box had 66 sellers holding 193 copies, which is deep enough that the cheapest listing is a real price rather than one person's mood.

Both floors are being set by the same handful of repricing sellers. Great Buys holds the cheapest listing on both boxes, 17 copies of Greninja at $58.93 and 21 copies of Sylveon at $64.89, with four or five other sellers stacked within pennies above. That pattern means the price can move without anybody buying or selling anything, so we treat a few cents as noise and only take a move seriously past a few percent.

Worth saying plainly: the Sylveon box is the one that was overpriced. The day before release it sat at 3.49 times its list price, the highest of any of the seven products launching that week against a group median of 3.04 times, and it has given back most of that gap since. The Greninja box did the opposite and broke hardest on day one, then bounced to $63.50, then came back down. Neither has found a level yet.

The Elite Trainer Box went the other way and our August call on it is wrong

On August 22 we said the 30th Celebration Elite Trainer Box would be cheaper by October 6, from a delivered price of $164.94. On Friday it cost $174.70. We wrote about this going against us two weeks ago when the box hit $184.74, and it has not come back to us since.

The interesting part is what happened to supply while that price rose. The ETB went from 35 sellers and 933 copies on September 15 to 123 sellers and 1,124 copies on Friday. More boxes reached the market every day and the price climbed through all of it, ending 4 percent above where it sat before the set was even on shelves.

The correction we are taking from it is narrow. When we made that call in August we were reading preorder asks, which are sellers guessing, and four days of real prices now say something different. Preorder decay is real and we have watched it work on six other 30th Celebration products. It does not apply evenly to the headline product in a set, because the Elite Trainer Box is what a casual buyer walks in and asks for by name, and that demand shows up after release rather than before it.

Reddit is loud about this set and none of it is buying

Our sweep pulled 363 posts off the three big card subreddits on Friday. 30th Celebration was the most mentioned thing in the whole sweep at about three times its normal rate, across 15 separate posts, which on any other week would be the strongest signal we had.

Reading the actual titles takes it apart. They are "Opening 30th Celebration was so fun", "My hits from my 30th Celebration Sylveon ex Box", "I just opened 12 packs", "opened around 70 packs", a complaint about a GameStop preorder, and a collector app update. That is people opening product rather than people buying it, and it arrives at the exact moment supply peaks. We have watched this same shape fool us twice in one week, once on the set and once on Sylveon by itself.

So there are no new watch candidates from us this week. Nothing cleared the checks we run, and a week with nothing in it beats a forced pick. The September 14 column laid out the five separate release dates this set is shipping across, which is the backdrop for all of it.

Halloween league promos arrive October 1

The one new piece of news worth logging is that exclusive Zubat, Golbat and Crobat promos will be handed out at Play! Pokemon leagues from October 1 to October 31, through tournaments, play and trade sessions, and other Pokeween events. They carry the same Pikachu pumpkin stamp used on Trick or Trade packs plus a Play! Pokemon watermark in the card body, and PokeBeach noted on September 17 that whether they are holo is still unclear.

We checked whether this hurts anything already in circulation and it does not. These are new cards rather than reprints, so no existing printing gets diluted, and the most expensive Zubat, Golbat or Crobat our tracker prices has exactly two copies listed on TCGplayer. There is no real market there to disturb.

What we are watching next

Here is the call, so a future post can grade it. We expect both ex Boxes to be cheaper on October 20 than they are today: below $58.93 delivered for the Greninja ex Box and below $64.89 for the Sylveon ex Box. If either is flat or higher on that date, we were wrong, and we will say so the same way we just did on the Elite Trainer Box.

Three ways this goes against us. Sealed 30th Celebration has stopped falling everywhere else in the set, so the two boxes could simply join the rest and settle where they are. The four packs inside each box still carry the RGB Mew secret rares, which are the one card in this set anybody is chasing, and a single confirmed pull can put a floor under a cheap sealed product overnight. And the Greninja box already bounced 9 percent between Wednesday and Thursday before falling again, so it has shown it can go up.

If you are weighing a sealed box as something to open and grade, the packs are the part that matters and the promo is not the reason.
