30th Celebration Elite Trainer Box Price Rose to $184 Before Release

Sixteen days ago we told readers the 30th Celebration Elite Trainer Box would be cheaper by October 6. This morning the cheapest one on TCGplayer costs $184.74 delivered, up from the $164.94 we measured on the day we said it. The set reaches shelves on September 16, which is nine days away, and the box has spent the past week moving against us.

We run a tracker that takes a daily price reading on about 3,000 modern Pokemon products and then checks the live seller listings behind them. This is the week it told us we had the timing backwards.

What the 30th Celebration Elite Trainer Box price looks like today

There are 32 sellers on the box right now holding 908 copies between them, with no foreign language listings mixed in. The cheapest copies run $184.74, $184.74, $184.75, $184.77 and on up to $184.87. Eight sellers inside thirteen cents of each other is what a board looks like when everyone has decided what a thing is worth.

Over the past seven days the market price TCGplayer publishes went from $165.14 to $184.60, and the cheapest listing went from $164.94 to $174.99. Both moved up together, which is the check we run before believing any price change.

Pokemon's own product page says the box will be available on September 16 and holds nine booster packs, a full art Nidorina promo, a player's guide, a coin flip die and a collector's box. Nidorina is number 0030 in the Pokedex, which is why it got the anniversary card.

Why our preorder decay call was wrong

The reasoning in the August 22 column was that a preorder price is only an ask, nobody is obliged to sell at it, and as more sellers arrive they undercut each other. We had watched 30th Celebration do exactly that: the cheapest box was $193.54 on August 8, $191.24 on August 19, then $164.94 on August 22 after a weekend of cutting.

What we got wrong is that the cutting stops. It runs while the release is a long way off and sellers are guessing. Once the shelf date is close enough that allocations are real, the guessing ends and the price firms up.

The clearest evidence is a box we called the same way on the same afternoon. The Delta Reign Elite Trainer Box does not release until November 6, so it is still 60 days out. It cost $199.40 delivered on August 22 and costs $138.08 today across 19 sellers and 586 copies, down about 31 percent. Same rule, same day, two boxes, and the only real difference between them is how far away the release is.

What is actually falling in the set

Across the 61 products in the 30th Celebration lineup this week, 15 rose, 25 fell, 9 sat still and 12 had no market price at all. Most of those declines do not survive a look at the real listings. Three do.

The Poster Collection is the cleanest of the three. Its published market price slid from $53.90 to $50.53 over the week and the live stack runs $50.39, $50.40, $50.42, $50.42, $50.44, so the average and the actual sellers agree on a deep board.

The ex Tin two pack is a genuine floor break. Its cheapest copy went from $249.84 to $148.95 in a single day and has sat there since. Read the ladder before you get excited: $144.95, $148.95, $149.93, and then it jumps to $249.78. Three sellers are holding that price down and there are only 27 copies on the whole board.

The Knock Out Collection Case fell hardest on paper, 26 percent, and it is the one we would ignore. At six sellers and eight copies, its cheapest listing measures how a few people feel this morning, not what the product is worth.

The mini tin price drop that is not a price drop

The Umbreon mini tin's published market price fell 11.1 percent over seven days, from $72.75 to $64.64, which on a chart looks like a sell off.

The cheapest copy you can actually buy moved 29 cents, from $49.78 to $49.49. There are 11 sellers and 121 copies, and the stack reads $49.49, $49.49, $49.49, $49.54, then $49.66 and up. Nothing got cheaper this week.

TCGplayer's market price is a weighted average of recent sales, and on this tin it had been sitting well above where anyone was really selling. All it did this week was walk down to meet a floor that has not moved since August. The other mini tins are the same shape: Moltres fell 16.8 percent on a cheapest copy that moved 2.0 percent, Mewtwo 11.8 against 1.8, Mew 10.1 against 1.3, Espeon 8.5 against 0.7.

When a sealed product shows a double digit drop, open the listings and read the cheapest few before you believe it.

Barely anyone is posting about the set

The odd part is that this price firmed while the conversation went quiet. Across 300 Pokemon posts we collected this morning, exactly two mention 30th Celebration by name, against an average of 6.4 a day over the previous twelve days. Both are in r/PokeInvesting and both are questions rather than hype, one about pull rates and one asking what people think of the set. The box is not being bid up by a wave of excitement. Sellers simply stopped cutting each other nine days before release.

What we expect on September 16, and the call we will grade

We have watched one release happen up close since the tracker started. The Ascended Heroes tins hit shelves on August 28, and we tracked what that did to them: the Mega Feraligatr ex tin went from 8 sellers at $74.17 to 48 sellers at $49.95 in about two days, because everyone who picked one off a shelf listed it at once. That is the same reason new set chase cards tend to sag in month two, just compressed into a weekend.

So here is the prediction, and we will mark it right or wrong in public when the date arrives. We expect the cheapest delivered 30th Celebration Elite Trainer Box on TCGplayer to be below the $184.74 we measured today when we check again on September 30, two weeks after release. If it is flat or higher, we were wrong twice on the same box and we will say so.

We are deliberately not naming a target price. Several calls in our ledger have had the right direction and a level we missed, so we now state the direction, the number we measured against, and what would make us wrong.

The honest counter argument is worth more than the call. Those Ascended Heroes tins had 8 sellers before release, so the flood of retail copies was most of the supply that ever existed. This box already has 32 sellers and 908 copies preordered, so the shelf date lands on a board that is deep to begin with and the drop could be much smaller.

There is one more thing underneath this that we cannot size. On August 24 eBay started removing in hand listings of 30th Anniversary product at the Pokemon Company's request, telling sellers the items were not distributed through authorized channels. We are not calling that scarcity, because a delisting does not change how much product ships on September 16, it only closes the place leaked copies were being priced. It did take a competing supply channel away in the same fortnight our box turned up, and we have no figure for how much product was involved. Delta Reign had nothing like it, so the pair is not quite as clean as we would like.
