Destined Rivals Booster Box Prices Are Riding a Reprint Pokemon Has Not Confirmed

Destined Rivals sealed product is being bought and sold right now on the strength of a reprint Pokemon has never announced. That was the loudest thing our tracker picked up this week, and it deserves a closer look, because the gap between what the market believes and what anyone can actually point to is wide.

Quick background on where these numbers come from: we run a tracker that follows the prices of about 3,000 modern products on TCGplayer and keeps up with the Pokemon subreddits and the bigger YouTube channels, trying to catch cards that pick up attention before the price follows. It started collecting prices this week, so it has no history to compare against yet, and the real watch calls start next Saturday. Here is what the first week turned up in the meantime.

Pokemon has not announced a Destined Rivals reprint

Of the 351 Reddit posts our tracker pulled on August 8, the busiest conversation was about Destined Rivals booster boxes. One post asks what everyone's buy in price is and opens with the reprint looming and prices dropping. Another asks whether a booster box reprint will drag PSA 10 slab prices down with it. A third comes from someone deciding whether to sell their Unova Heavy Hitters because they keep watching other sets get reprinted. One poster says they're eyeing boxes at "around 380ish all in" and plan to wait a week or two to see where prices settle.

So what has actually been confirmed? Not much. We opened Pokemon's own Destined Rivals page today and it reads "Available Now!", lists five product types, and says nothing about a reprint, a restock, or a print run. The most detailed report out there, published August 7, says reprinted boxes and Elite Trainer Boxes should start arriving near the end of August, and that same article states plainly that its figures are not confirmed by the Pokemon Company and come from market commentators rather than any announcement. Take the dates as estimates, because that is what the article itself calls them. For now we are treating the set as in print and the reprint as a rumor, and we would hold it at arm's length until Pokemon or a major retailer puts something in writing.

What we can verify is today's price, from two sources that have no idea the other exists:

Both were pulled on August 8 and land roughly 1% apart, which is reassuring for a tracker in its first week. What we can't tell you is what those numbers were seven days ago, since our history starts now. You may have seen the claim that boxes once traded past $600; it comes from the same unconfirmed article, so we aren't repeating it as though we measured it.

Our prediction for Destined Rivals prices

We looked at whether reprints hurt the original card back in July, and the answer there was mostly no. But that post was about 30th Celebration, which arrives September 16 and reprints Base Set Charizard as a clearly marked card carrying its own set stamp. The 1999 original stays its own card with its own supply, and the market can price the two separately.

A restock works differently. If Destined Rivals boxes get printed again, the new boxes hold the same cards with the same numbering, and nothing tells the market which print run a copy came from. So the comforting finding from that July post doesn't apply here. If cheaper boxes arrive and people rip them, the market simply gets more copies of Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex, identical to the ones already out there.

That makes the set's chase card the thing to watch. As of August 8, Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex (#231/182) sits at $517.26 market in our snapshot, with a low listing at $424.99 and a mid of $538.50. The Pokemon TCG API (sv10-231) shows the same $517.26 holofoil market price updated the same day, and PriceCharting has the raw at $523.88, a Grade 9 at $534.00, a 9.5 at $750.00, and the PSA 10 at $1,167.00. A Grade 9 at $534 against a $517 raw copy is a wash once grading and selling fees come out, so the whole case for submitting rests on the PSA 10 at roughly 2.2 times the raw price, which is thin for a modern chase card.

So this post comes with a prediction, and it covers the set, not just one card. We expect Destined Rivals sealed to be cheaper on October 15 than it is today, below the $468.56 booster box and $133.31 Elite Trainer Box prices we logged this week. The reasoning is the supply math above: if the reprint lands the way the August 7 report describes, fresh boxes hit a market that is already talking itself down. We expect the chase card to follow, with Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex raw below today's $517.26 on the same date. The call stands whether or not the reprint actually shows up, and if prices are higher on October 15, we were wrong and we'll say so when we grade it.

We're not naming exact floors, because our last two floors broke. We put a $110 floor under N's Zekrom and it slid straight through on nothing but fading attention, and we gave Pikachu & Zekrom GX a $90 to $110 landing zone after the anniversary reveal and it went to $50. So we're calling the direction and leaving the numbers out of it.

Check what the cheap listings actually are

We also went through the live sealed listings this week, and they hold a lesson if you shop by lowest price.

The English Destined Rivals Booster Box page has 83 live listings. Sorted cheapest first it opens at $41.93, and that listing is a Chinese Glory of Team Rocket slim box. Under $80 you'll find more Chinese boxes, a run of Korean ones, and bundles of 36 loose packs in a plastic protector rather than a sealed box. Genuine sealed English boxes start around $415.

Pitch Black is worse. Its Elite Trainer Box page opens at $1 for a Darkrai coin and dice, then $3 for a Zarude promo, pieces somebody pulled out of an Elite Trainer Box and listed against the box's own product page. Real Pitch Black Elite Trainer Boxes start around $76, against the box's $72.66 market price.

We covered stale comparison prices when we separated real arbitrage from mirages, and this is a different trap: the listing is real and cheap, but it isn't the product you searched for. On sealed, go by the overall market price and ignore the lowest listing.

Singles have their own version of this. Search our snapshot for "Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex" and five products come back, from a $20.78 printing through a $383.97 Ascended Heroes version up to the $517.26 illustration rare. Every one of them is legitimately named Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex, so check the collector number before you compare prices on anything.

What ran without us

Our tracker contributed nothing to this week's movers. Thursday's column flagged Primal Kyogre-EX and a $1 Metang, and both were found through outside sources. The tracker couldn't have surfaced either one: it had no price history on August 6, and Ancient Origins is a 2015 set, older than anything it follows. We're writing that down now so that in a month we can check whether it has started earning its keep or just agrees with things we already knew.

Zero candidates this week

Before we call anything a candidate we want five things: to know exactly which card it is down to the collector number, live English listings you could actually buy, a price with a source and a date attached, real evidence behind any claim about print status, and proof the card hasn't already run. That last one needs a seven day price change, and we have one day of history, so anything we published as a candidate today would really just be a list of what people are talking about. That's why the list is empty this week.

We also caught a bug in our own process this week. The tool that counts listings for us had been reading a preview that returns about three listings for every product, no matter how many actually exist, so nothing ever failed the check. Pointed at the full count, a card that supposedly had 3 listings turned out to have 83. We only caught it by asking why every number looked the same.

So there are no buys this week, just the Destined Rivals prediction above and a Prismatic Evolutions reprint rumor logged as unknown because we couldn't find a page that settles it. Our tracker surfaces things worth watching and nothing more; it isn't financial advice.
